2012 Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception

Each year, the County of Sonoma joins local governments and nonprofits across the nation to Celebrate Service from our excellent volunteers. Each year, the President of the United States of America issues a Presidential Proclamation for National Volunteer Week. This year, Volunteer Week was observed April 21st through April 27th, and during this week we recognize America’s history of individuals who selflessly serve others in our nation.

Our 29th Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception took place on Thursday, April 25, 2013. Nearly 500 volunteers, County staff who work with them, Board of Supervisors, the County Administrator and guests transformed the Finley Hall at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds into a beautiful celebration of dedication, talent, and the community spirit of giving.

Chairman David Rabbitt shared the gold resolution in honor of National Volunteer Week, recognizing the invaluable role of Sonoma County’s 3,000 volunteers. Later, the Chairman along with Supervisors Susan Gorin, Shirlee Zane, Mike McGuire, and Efren Carrillo presented awards and resolutions to 13 Outstanding Volunteers selected by departments and programs. See our 2012 Outstanding Volunteer recipients.

Here are just some of the contributions made by our volunteers:

  • Put out fires
  • Cut trails
  • Clothed the babies of teen parents
  • Cared for homeless animals
  • Handled hazardous materials
  • Provided health education
  • Provided comfort to children who really needed comforting
  • Helped people find the services they need to survive
  • Checked on the houses of people away on vacation
  • Collected drainage data
  • Helped peoples’ backyard bloom
  • And much, much more!

The volunteers received gifts, participated in a door prize raffle, and enjoyed a delicious appetizer buffet prepared by Big Boy’s Bar-B-Que. Also, an inspirational slide show was enjoyed by all. The stars of the event were the volunteers, whose noble and priceless contributions help to make our community, our County, a better place for all. We honor and salute them for their caring actions towards this community and its citizens.
