2011 Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception

Celebrating People in Action

The 28th Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception took place on May 3, 2012. Nearly 500 volunteers, County staff who work with them, Board of Supervisors, the County Administrator and guests transformed the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Auditorium into a celebration of dedication, talent and the spirit of giving.

Chairwoman Shirlee Zane shared the gold resolution in honor of National Volunteer Week, recognizing the invaluable role of Sonoma County’s 3,000 volunteers. Later, the Chairwoman along with Supervisors Mike McGuire and David Rabbitt presented awards and resolutions to 18 Outstanding Volunteers selected by departments and programs. We paid tribute to Toni Fitzpatrick, a member of the Volunteer Recognition Committee, who passed away this year.

Curious about some of our volunteer contributions? Here is just a glimpse of their actions:

  • Put out fires
  • Cut trails
  • Clothed the babies of teen parents
  • Cared for homeless animals
  • Researched economic issues
  • Handled hazardous materials
  • Provided health education
  • Provided comfort to children who really needed comforting
  • Helped people find the services they need to survive
  • Checked on the houses of people away on vacation
  • Collected drainage data
  • Helped peoples’ backyard bloom
  • And much, much more!

The volunteers enjoyed delicious appetizers prepared by Big Boy’s Bar-B-Que. The venue was transformed into a beautiful view of colorful flowers, handmade made by some creative current and retired employees. The volunteers received gifts, participated in a raffle, delicious food prepared by Big Boy’s Bar-B-Que, and an inspirational slide show were enjoyed by all. The real stars of the afternoon were the County volunteers whose noble and generous contributions help to make our community, our County a better place for all. We honor, salute and thank them.
